Ever since man has been born, animals have also. Everyone loves to go to a zoo and gush over all the different types of animals they see. Animals have a way of bringing out what good there is in mankind. But have you really thought about all the different benefits that having an animal, especially a dog or a cat, as a pet can give you?
First, pets can give one companionship. This is especially true with the elderly population. Imagine losing your spouse of fifty plus years. An incredible heartbreak and void would enter one’s life. Pets can help fill that void. There really is something to be said for the old saying that “dog is a man’s best friend.” Pets can also offer love and companionship to lost parents whom have recently become those infamous empty nesters. Having a pet can give one a sense of feeling of having someone to take care of again. Pets can give one redirection and additional purpose in one’s life.
Pets, dogs specifically, can also offer security for their owners. How many times have you turned on the news to hear about a potential break-in interrupted by the barking dog? Time and time again we have all heard stories just like that where the dog is the family’s protector and security guard.
Pets also give one a good excuse and encouragement to get out and exercise. Even if we are really not feeling up to taking a walk, we can take the family dog out for its evening stroll. Most of the times, we will be the ones who enjoy the walk just as much as the dog did.
Pets can also offer a means for social support. When one is seen out walking the family dog, that person becomes more approachable to others. Many times even though people would like to meet new friends, they may be just too shy to go up to someone and start talking, or we may say hello to someone we meet walking on the street. But if we are out walking with the dog, that gives others as an initial excuse for stopping and talking. Thus we tend to create more friendship networks this way.
Pets such as dogs and cats also can improve one’s mood. When one has had a stressful day at work, is sick or just plain upset about something, the one who seems to always be there is the pet. No matter how hard one may try, it is extremely difficult to stay in a bad mood when your pet comes around wanting and needing your affectionate attention.
